Bitter Much?: Heartbreak Art
Clockwise from top left: a Jennifer Pod screen-print canvas, the artist, and her new hand-crafted pendants
For Valentine’s Day, indie-trendy Jennifer Pod gathered a group of pals for a zombie-themed bike ride. That cupid-be-damned riff on romance is the norm for the rising-star artist and cultural gadfly, who creates heart-heavy angry-girl poetry. The Houston native—who has shown at emerging-artists gallery Galleria Lazzara—does both subtle paintings (“Love is Just a Miserable Lie” is a semi-abstract of scattered hearts) and bizarre sculpture, like blood-red piƱatas shaped like the actual organ—chambers, vessels and all. Pod’s artsy accessories, such as her bicycle accoutrements (available at new Houston Fixed Gear shop, 1846 Westheimer Rd., 713.522.8330) as well as her new iPhone covers, clutches and pendants also tout her signature symbol. She makes greeting cards too, with inscriptions like “I enjoyed having sex with you.” Dare we ask if there’s a Mr. Pod? “I think it’s pretty obvious,” she says. Not that she’s complaining. “Heartbreak helps my art.”
