Best of Nightlife: Thirsting for Art?
Khon’s, above, regularly has work by local artists on its walls, and, at left, liquid inspiration at Pinot & Picasso.
As club kids migrate to Wash Ave, Midtown is booming as an art-smart ’hood where bars double as galleries. Nouveau Antique Art Bar (2913 Main St.) is new, with antique chaises, Gustav Klimt prints and a Frank Sinatra-savvy soundtrack that nods to the Nouveau era. Zimbabwean sculptures flank the 6,000-square-foot garden and the exposed brick walls at Boheme wine bar (307 Fairview St., 713.529.1099). At Khon’s (2808 Milam St., 713.523.7775) dartboards intermix with solo shows by underground artists like Frank Zeni, whose wild tribal-feeling wall sculptures are up now. Rather do than view? Pinot & Picasso (2406 Taft St., 713.523.4769) offers painting classes and encourages pupils to bring their own vino.
